What is textile waste?

Textile waste is anything made from natural or synthetic fibers (or a blend) that are often spun, woven, or knitted – and is no longer needed. This could be offcuts generated during the manufacturing process, unwanted clothes that are too small, or ripped curtains and damaged upholstery. Any fabrics set to be thrown away are examples of textile waste.

The most common type of textile trash is clothes waste. Billions of items of clothing are chucked out every year and they’re all made from different textile materials, such as cotton wool, and polyester. However, they can be collected together before being processed, recycled, and some of the materials recovered.

These are some common examples of textile waste:

  • Clothes
  • Shoes
  • Sheets and duvets
  • Towels
  • Carpet
  • Pillowcases
  • Tablecloths
  • Upholstery (furniture covers)

How does used clothing
recycling work?

Many used clothes and other textiles are recyclable. Any clothing that’s still wearable and the likes of towels, curtains, or other fabrics in good condition should ideally be reused. Consider donating them to a charity or community cause or reusing them within your business where possible. Clothes and textiles damaged beyond repair can be recycled.

Separate old clothing and textiles from other types of trash in individual bins or dumpsters to reduce the risk of contamination. They’ll be collected and transported by fully licensed professionals to specialist textile recycling facilities. Here they’re separated by material, assessed, and recycled in various ways.

Textile recycling processes depend on the type of fabrics and materials the clothing or other items contain. These are the general recycling and reuse options for the main fabric materials:

  • Natural fabrics – many natural fabrics are fully recyclable. They go through a process that pulls apart the fibers, cleans the material, and spins it back into yarn. This yarn is then used to create new fabrics used to make clothes and other items.
  • Polyester – as polyester is a synthetic fabric and a type of plastic it can be recycled on its own. The waste polyester is shredded to create small polyester chips, which are then melted and formed into fresh polyester fabrics.
  • Synthetic textiles – many other synthetic fabrics can be recycled for different uses to their original purpose. They may be shredded and the fabrics used to fill automotive seats, insulation, toys, pet beds, and packaging. It’s not recycled into its original state but finding a new use for these fabrics avoids sending them to landfills.

Scrap fabric recycling

Recycling scrap fabric keeps it away from landfills and ensures such textiles are recovered and reused. Many businesses generate fabric scrap of various kinds. This includes soiled bed sheets and torn curtains from hotels, old towels in a gym, ripped carpet from an office, and damaged tablecloths from a restaurant.

A simple solution is to use any bits of scrap fabric as rags for cleaning. It saves on the time, energy, and costs to arrange collection and disposal. If you’ve got high volumes of fabric scrap for recycling, then you can store it in bins and dumpsters alongside other waste textiles.

They’ll be taken to specialist fabric recycling facilities for assessment, cleaning, and processing. The process to recycle scrap fabric will depend on the specific material. A common route is for fabric scrap to be cleaned, shredded, and used to fill insulation products, car seating, toys, and even flooring.

Fashion waste FAQs

  • TEXTILE How much clothing waste is produced each year?

It’s estimated that 92 million tons of textile waste is produced each year around the world. Most of this is made up of clothing waste from individuals, households, and businesses. More than 100 billion items of clothing are produced every year globally and in the USA about 11 million tons end up in landfills.

  • TEXTILE Why is textile waste a problem?

Textile waste is a problem because it accounts for about 5% of all trash in landfills and takes hundreds of years to decompose. It releases chemicals into the ground, water, and air that add to pollution levels. Recycling textiles is more complex than other materials due to the different types as well.

  • TEXTILE How does textile waste affect the environment?

Textile waste is responsible for two billion tons of greenhouse gases. This is a combination of the energy and resources required to produce textiles and the impact of clothing waste in landfills. Creating textiles also uses huge amounts of water and pollutes water sources due to dyes being discharged into water bodies.

  • TEXTILE Are old clothes recyclable?

Many old clothes are recyclable, but it depends on their material. Old clothes made from fully natural textiles like cotton and wool should be completely recyclable and can be turned into new cotton and wool products. Items made of synthetic fabrics can also be recycled but might be used for different purposes (such as stuffing products).

  • TEXTILE Can you recycle sheets?

You can recycle sheets such as bed sheets, but it depends on their condition and material. Sheets made from natural textiles should be recyclable. Any old bed sheets that are soiled, ripped, or damaged beyond repair or reuse might still be recyclable but require cleaning and shredding before they’re recycled for another purpose.
